Hello, I’m Senator Paul Bailey bringing you this week’s capitol update. Although I’m at the state capitol, certainly a more beautiful side is Cummins Fall State Park located in Senate District 15, which is truly one of the most amazing areas of the state.
First, I want to reiterate the announcement made last week that the application for Tennessee reconnect is now open. I was pleased to support this program which allows adults who did not complete their post secondary degree in past years to enroll tuition free at a community or technical college.
To be eligible for this program, a student must not hold an Associate or Bachelor’s Degree and must have been a Tennessee resident for one year. I hope many of our local citizens will take advantage of this great opportunity.
Move into legislation before us this session, two important measures that will benefit our veterans have passed our state senate. Senate Bill 1675 ensures that disabled veterans can continue to qualify for property tax relief if they are hospitalized or temporarily placed in a nursing home, but intend to return home.
The Senate has also given final approval to send it built in which exempts disabled veterans from paying sales or tax registration fees on modified vehicles received from the VA. Our general assembly continues to take pride in helping those who have served our great country.
In other matters, I would like to remind you that the 2017-2018 Tennessee blue book has arrived. The blue book is full of useful information about our great state and its government.
The name Blue Book dates back to the 15th century when the English Parliament began keeping its record and large volumes covered in blue velvet. Please call my office if you would like a copy.
Finally, I would like to express my sincere condolences at the passing of the Reverend Billy Graham. He had an impact on so many of us and was such a positive spiritual leader. I hope you will join me in keeping his family in our thoughts and prayers.
Please do not hesitate to contact my office with any issues or to express your opinion on legislation. And until next week, this is Paul Bailey with your capitol update.
